Bicycle Advisory Group - Origin

The Bicycle Advisory Group (BAG) started in 2016 as a collaboration with Black Hills State University, the City of Spearfish and local citizens. The original goal was to get Bicycle Friendly City from the League of American Bicyclists for Spearfish. While Spearfish did not meet the requirements, the feedback was helpful and the group continued to collaborate on increasing bicycle infrastructure in Spearfish. Our mission is to increase cycling opportunities through evaluation and engineering in and around Spearfish.

In the last few years, we have helped with the Parks and Recreation Master Plan to get lots of feedback from cyclists and highlight the areas that need the most improvement and further facilities, including getting a path to Creekside Elementary, a connector from Evans Park to the Sawyer Brewery area, and a path out to Exit 17. We also worked with city engineers on the new bike lanes to ensure the markings and signage were clear and visible to all road users.

We are currently working with the city, SD Department of Transportation, and engineers to ensure that bicycle infrastructure is included in the Colorado Boulevard Corridor Study. One of our more fun projects is working with high school welders to get art made of bicycles into public spaces!

BAG is an informal organization that has monthly virtual meetings the 4th Wednesday of the month from 3:00-4:00pm. We do not have a board or funding. Would you like to join? Email bikespearfish@gmail.com
